Natural Reserve of the “Macalube”

At the “Macalube” Nature Reserve (from the arab maqlùb = reflux), managed by Legambiente, you can see a rare phenomenon - hundreds of cold mud volcanoes reaching from a few centimeters to one meter in height spewing a bubbly mixture of salty mud and methane gas. These unusual looking volcanoes, spread across a hilly and partly flat area, were described by foreign travelers in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries who recognized their scientific importance. The reserve area is easily accessible and open, and is currently undergoing a major project to restore it and the surrounding areas to their original natural ecosystem.
